Hovering Club Discussion
Hovering Your Golf Club Before the Swing
Hovering a golf club before the swing can create a smoother takeaway and improve your tempo. Try this simple setup technique to reduce snatching and become more aware of your grip position.
After this video, you'll be able to:
- Understand how hovering the club can enhance your takeaway tempo
- Identify when to use club hovering for better grip control
- Recognize the impact of club height on your angle of attack with the driver

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:08.320
In this concept video, we're going to discuss hovering the club.
2
00:00:08.320 --> 00:00:12.940
So there are a couple different scenarios where I'll advocate my students do
3
00:00:12.940 --> 00:00:13.240
more of
4
00:00:13.240 --> 00:00:16.800
a hover instead of grounding the club.
5
00:00:16.800 --> 00:00:23.560
If I hover the club, then I don't have to overcome a resting inertia or the
6
00:00:23.560 --> 00:00:24.000
club sitting
7
00:00:24.000 --> 00:00:25.240
on the ground.
8
00:00:25.240 --> 00:00:29.470
So for some golfers who tend to really kind of snatch the club away, this can
9
00:00:29.470 --> 00:00:29.840
help
10
00:00:29.840 --> 00:00:32.100
smooth out the takeaway.
11
00:00:32.100 --> 00:00:37.550
So this can be a really good tempo pattern for golfers who tend to get a little
12
00:00:37.550 --> 00:00:38.320
snatchier
13
00:00:38.320 --> 00:00:39.760
a little quick.
14
00:00:39.760 --> 00:00:45.170
The other common time that I use it is some golfers have either a really weak
15
00:00:45.170 --> 00:00:45.740
grip or
16
00:00:45.740 --> 00:00:47.460
a really strong grip.
17
00:00:47.460 --> 00:00:53.940
And when we get them in a more neutral grip, as right before they go to swing,
18
00:00:53.940 --> 00:00:54.640
they'll
19
00:00:54.640 --> 00:00:57.200
turn it one way or the other.
20
00:00:57.200 --> 00:00:59.680
And they're often not aware of it and then I'll show them on medium like I don
21
00:00:59.680 --> 00:00:59.960
't even
22
00:00:59.960 --> 00:01:01.760
feel like I'm doing that.
23
00:01:01.760 --> 00:01:05.620
So a common time for if you're working on getting a grip position to feel a
24
00:01:05.620 --> 00:01:06.220
little bit
25
00:01:06.220 --> 00:01:09.240
more comfortable, I'll recommend hovering the club.
26
00:01:09.240 --> 00:01:13.750
With the irons and wedges and things, you're going to hover it just barely off
27
00:01:13.750 --> 00:01:14.480
the grass.
28
00:01:14.480 --> 00:01:18.400
With the driver, you can hover it pretty close to the height of the golf ball.
29
00:01:18.400 --> 00:01:23.650
In fact, I think that hovering it with the driver can help with angle of attack
30
00:01:23.650 --> 00:01:24.240
and flat
31
00:01:24.240 --> 00:01:28.440
spot, partly from smoothing out and getting more of the body working.
32
00:01:28.440 --> 00:01:34.510
So if you struggle with either a really poor tempo and trigger with your
33
00:01:34.510 --> 00:01:36.040
takeaway, then
34
00:01:36.040 --> 00:01:38.840
I'd recommend hovering the club on most shots.
35
00:01:38.840 --> 00:01:43.010
And if you're working through a grip change and you see on video that it just
36
00:01:43.010 --> 00:01:44.080
keeps reverting
37
00:01:44.080 --> 00:01:48.520
back to your more comfortable grip, then I'd also advocate hovering the club.
38
00:01:48.520 --> 00:01:51.300
It'll make you a little bit more aware of what your hands are doing as you
39
00:01:51.300 --> 00:01:51.880
start your
40
00:01:51.880 --> 00:01:52.880
swing.
41
00:01:52.880 --> 00:01:56.880
You'll hover it just above the grass right there.

on the ground.
